At Beyond Support Foundation, we believe that every mother deserves to welcome her child into the world with dignity, safety, and hope. As part of our 2026 program activities, we are implementing the Safe Motherhood Support Initiative, a community-centered effort designed to support vulnerable and teenage mothers who face financial challenges after giving birth.
Why This Initiative Matters
For many women in Kenya, especially those from low-income households, accessing maternal healthcare is difficult. Even after a successful delivery, some mothers are unable to leave the hospital because they cannot settle their maternity bills.
This situation often results in prolonged hospital stays, emotional stress for mothers and families, and increased pressure on healthcare facilities that must continue providing space and care.
Teenage mothers are among the most affected. Many lack financial independence or strong support systems and often face social stigma, making it even harder to manage the costs associated with childbirth.
The Safe Motherhood Support Initiative responds to this challenge by ensuring that vulnerable mothers and their newborn babies return home safely and begin their new chapter in a supportive environment.
Understanding the Situation
In cities like Nairobi, many families depend on public hospitals for maternal healthcare. While these facilities provide essential services, additional medical costs—such as complications during delivery or extended care—can create unexpected financial burdens.
Hospital social workers frequently encounter mothers who are medically ready to be discharged but remain admitted simply because they cannot clear the remaining hospital balance. Community-driven interventions play an important role in bridging this gap and providing timely support where it is needed most.
What the Initiative Does
Through the Safe Motherhood Support Initiative 2026, Beyond Support Foundation works closely with selected public hospitals in Nairobi to identify vulnerable mothers who require assistance.
Once cases are identified and verified by hospital social workers, the Foundation helps clear outstanding maternity bills so that mothers can be formally discharged. In addition to financial support, mothers receive basic newborn care packages to help them care for their babies during the first days at home.
